We salute our heroes

We Salute our Heroes.

This line has become common and viral nowadays.

But do we really understand it?

Why we are talking of a salute for a healthcare worker (HCW)?

Normally, associated with armed forces, it a measure of deepest respect towards those defending our countries and borders.

Today, this word is used for the entire selfless, dedicated breed of HCW who are devoted to fighting COVID 19.

You have to be inside a hospital, nowadays, to understand this.

Doctors, nurses, paramedics, attendants, security, housekeeping, kitchen staff…. the entire back office team. They are on a mission… standing attention all the time.

They too are overwhelmed.

They too get tired.

They too sometimes wish…. when will I just sit back and relax?.

But putting aside their fears, (they are most prone to be infected) and all the incessant exhaustion seeped into their bones, they just work, work and work.

They do not have the free time (all those in a lockdown safe at homes have no idea, how lucky they are) to do online games, video calling with friends and family, read a book, etc.

Consumed with their duties, it is just Patient care for them…. morning, evening and night.

Their families are home. Some of them do not even go back home for fear of a rare chance of infecting them. And for those lucky few able to go home, it is long list of dos and don’ts before entering their homes.

The work pressures are relentless. And they are beyond the brink of exhaustion.

This pandemic will leave its scars. Emotional and Psychological on the entire healthcare community. Drained to the very core, each healthcare worker has stopped sitting and ruminating over this situation.

For there is no time.

Each second is precious. For Care. For Life.

“We Really Salute our Heroes.”
