Book Review: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Written by Death.

An extremely unusual narrative adopted, The Book Thief is a poetry of words, a melancholy of emotions, and in some strange way, a curling of hope.

The Book Thief is poignant….slowly drawing you in, inch by inch. Embracing with its poetry of words, it is a book to be savoured, word by word, page by page. At some places, each word used is like a knife being pushed into you quietly.

The narrator, Death, story telling is detailed. The characters of Leslie, Rudy, Hans, Rosa and Max will always remain etched and I feel will always linger in a corner of my mind and heart.

Set in 1942-45 it captures the depair and gloom of the war . The point when Leslie spots Max again in the march of the Jews is heart wrenching…..wherein one wants to step inside the book and set everything right.

Markus Zusak has written a masterpiece. It is one of the rare books which can be read and re read.

I am sure I will after a few years pick this book again to read the words.
